Ambulatory Surgery at PHC Receives Top Ratings

In years past, having a surgical procedure performed usually entailed a minimum of at least one overnight stay in the hospital. Today, ambulatory (or same-day) surgery allows a person to return home on the same day that a surgical procedure is performed in more than 60% of all elective surgery procedures. And health experts expect that percentage to increase to nearly 75% over the next decade. Over the last three decades, this trend toward outpatient surgery has been the result of the development of less invasive surgical techniques, improved surgical instruments, a team approach in preparing a person for surgery and home recovery and the desire to reduce health care costs.

Putnam Hospital Center's Ambulatory Surgery Unit, located on the ground floor of the outpatient services building that opened in 2001, provides its full range of outpatient surgeries with a staff of highly trained, skilled professionals in a friendly and caring environment. Since 2004, its ambulatory surgery services have scored in the top 10% in New York State for patient satisfaction, as measured by Press Ganey Associates. And recently, a New York State Department of Health study noted the hospital's surgical infection prevention rate was the highest in the region.

Each year, the hospital performs hundreds of different surgical procedures for more than 5,500 patients, from infants through the geriatric population.  The procedures range from general surgeries to orthopedic, ophthalmologic, OB/GYN, plastic, urologic, thoracic, vascular and ear/nose/throat surgeries to endoscopies, lithotripsies and pain management. An outpatient surgical experience for the patient at Putnam Hospital Center is unique to many other ambulatory centers because the patient is able to register, have pre-admission tests, surgery, and recovery all in one physical location. Once discharged, follow-up care is provided to each patient by telephone to ensure that the recovery is progressing successfully.

The tastefully appointed Ambulatory Surgery Unit is configured to allow for easy visual assessment and quick access to the patients. At PHC, you'll find a new post-anesthesia care unit (or recovery room) as well as new and renovated state-of-the art operating rooms. These include the region's only cutting-edge laminar air flow operating rooms designed to reduce the risk of infection by keeping out virtually all dust and bacteria.

Ambulatory surgery provides an efficient and flexible approach that is less stressful than an inpatient stay, more convenient and more cost effective, too. You can schedule procedures on your own time and recover in the convenience of your own home that very same day.

When you need professional, safe, convenient same day surgery, contact the center scored in the top 10% of the state. For more information about Ambulatory Surgery at Putnam Hospital Center, please call 845-279-5711.
